My family is enjoying a beautiful week in sunny Florida. As part of that lovely week, we went to Gulf World Marine Park yesterday. We had an interesting experience that reinforces what I work with people on in the Success Blueprint. The Trainer asked for volunteers to come up and engage with the animals.
Now for a little back story, Sydney LOVES animals and wants to be a Veterinarian or a Dolphin Trainer. Here is a dream chance standing right in front of her. I told her to wave like she meant it. Sydney is jumping up and down so excited… literally vibrating!
The trainer doesn’t even look at her and says into her mic that only children sitting quietly will be chosen (not part of the original instruction). THEN she goes on to say, “How about the little girl in purple who is sitting nicely”. She completely ignores Sydney, embarrasses her publicly (in front of hundreds of people) and punishes her by not selecting her (that’s ok, we bought a dolphin encounter).
My point is this… I leaned over to Sydney and said “Little girls who sit quietly and hope life happens to them rarely ever change the world. You keep jumping and waving and yelling {LIFE PICK ME}”.
We have to teach our girls to go after what they want. I spend far too much time helping women in their 40’s discover themselves for the first time after a life time of being shoved into a box of someone else’s making. So much in childhood can quash a child’s spirit… even dolphin trainers at Gulf World. It’s my job as a Mother to make sure Sydney never needs me as a coach!
