Today’s topic… Personal mission.
This is a topic I speak on quite often. In order to be truly happy and truly successful we have to discover our personal mission. Each of us is here for a reason. There is work that only we can do and God sent us here for that purpose! It is essential that we tap into that mission.
Years ago, I defined my mission in the midst of what looked like disaster. I had grown dispassionate and bored in my field career. When I first announced that I was leaving…. my upline, my team, my family and my friends wanted to stage and intervention! They thought I was having a nervous breakdown. After all, I was leaving a successful business after 18 years! What could I have been thinking?
I will admit, it may have looked like a nervous breakdown and I shed more than a few tears. I WAS in crisis. I remember praying for direction and a few heated exchanges with God along the lines of… how could you let me build all of this just to take the passion from my heart? The answer that I received over and over was…”There is work for you to do Daughter”. (The use of the word “Daughter” is funny. I think God may have been frustrated with me.. CHILD, quit asking why and do as I say. LOL)
There was indeed a restlessness in my spirit. It had been there or some time. There was the call of something “bigger”. Not better or more important than where I was but something I could only describe as “bigger”. Each time it would arise, I would silently shoo it away. I would reason with myself, after all…this was who I was, this is what I did, people depended on me etc. Finally, I guess God just took the decision from me. I literally woke up one day passionless. That inability to stay resulted in the freedom to follow the new path. With the new path came the discovery of my mission… building people.
I can look back over my entire life and see that passion at play. I have always rooted for the underdog. I lived that passion in the recruiting process, furthered it in team building. It continues in the work that I do for companies. I build the company through the people. It is always about the people building. And not just people building but the building of the builders. It is the work I do weekly with coaching clients. I am known as a personal growth coach. I live that mission in keynote lectures and at our DSI Leadership Retreats. The builders in turn, build the others. THAT is my “bigger”.
So here is the thought for today… The things that bring us joy are the keys to unlocking our personal mission. Spend a little time with that. What brings you joy? What brings you fulfillment? When do you feel your absolute best? Are you in touch with your “bigger” purpose? Are you willing to go after your “bigger”?
Going after your “Bigger” doesn’t have to mean a company change. Sometimes WE need to change to fulfill the bigger. Sometimes, the location needs to change. I say that especially for my friends who’s companies have recently announced that they were closing. Your “bigger may be calling you. Be fearless in your pursuit of it!
